A computer system a group of parts working together to aid in operation of a computer. Computer systems can be divided into two main kinds according to whether they tangible or not. The parts which real and can be touched known as hardware, whereas parts which intangible called software. Examples of latter programs and data.
There three types of hardware in a computer system and these can be differentiated on basis of their functions. The first kind is type which sends information to computer or receives information from it. Keyboards and printers are examples of this kind of hardware and known as peripheral devices. Second kind is hardware which stores information and programs, and called memory storage, while last kind controls all devices in computer and functions as computer’s brain.
Hardware for memory storage can be further classified into 2 types, based on their location. The primary memory located inside computer, whereas secondary memory, which includes disks, tapes etc, located outside computer.
Finally, there two categories of primary memory which can be classified according to whether their information lost when computer switched off, or not. If computer does not retain information, this kind of memory called RAM or random access memory. Information can be written into this memory, or can be read from it. However, if computer retains information, this memory called ROM or read only memory. The computer can read information from Rom, but cannot put information into it.
