7  Mini Presentation and Summary - UFOs

Genetic Engineering

10 Reading, Researching, Outlining and Writing an Essay

11 Discussion

1 -  Blogging

An easy way to put your work online on the Internet is to blog. Go to http://www.blogger.com or http://edublogs.org and follow the instructions on the screen. At the end of the course, you can put your presentation and outline online.

2 -  Outlining

1 If you go to http://www.english-zone.com/index.html, you will find information about outlines and writing paragraphs.

2 Download a reading passage from the Internet, and make up your own outline. If this is too easy, download 2 passages and make up an outline based on the information in the 2 texts. Suggested topics: vertebrates, animals, fish, software, industries, automobile industry, automobiles, science. (The list is endless!!). When you do your research essay, you will need to make an outline using information from 3 sources. When you prepare your presentation, you will need to use more than one source too.

3 -  Library Skills

1 Adding references:
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/research/r_docelectric.html

2 Preparing a works cited section

http://www.webster.commnet.edu/mla/index.shtml

4 -  Website Evaluation Sheet

Source Oxford University Press

When you write your presentation, you must take notes from 3 sources: the Internet, an encyclopedia, and a textbook. Complete the following table to evaluate 2 websites that you have visited. You can save them as favorites in your home computer.

1  Name of site

2  URL

3  Date visited

4  Reviewer

5  Brief summary of site’s contents

6  Is the site correct, reliable and accurate?

7  Is the site up to date?

8  When were the pages last updated?

9  Is the content interesting, funny, relevant, useful or entertaining?

10 Is it easy to navigate?

11 Does it use a lot of graphics, sound or multimedia files?

12 Do all the links work?

13 Is it fast or slow?

14 Notes

5 -  Presentation

1 Go to http://www.presentationhelper.co.uk and click on the buttons on the left side of the screen. You will find a lot of information about giving an excellent presentation. In particular, you should read the information about a Ten Minute Presentation, which is what you have to present in class.

2 For more information, go to http://web.mit.edu/writing/Writing_Types/oral.html.

3 If you go to http://www.kumc.edu/SAH/OTEd/jradel/Preparing_talks/103.html, you will find stages to help you turn your ideas into a good presentation.

4 Type 100 most endangered sites in a search box and see you if you can find a page that deals with information about monuments and sites that are in danger of being destroyed. Then make up an outline showing the information. You can change the layout of this outline to fit your needs. When you have finished, you can make another one for snakehead fish. Remember to include your bibliography at the bottom of the page. You can then write a paragraph based on your outline, type it, and send the paragraph to your very own weblog, http://www.blogger.com, or you can start your own e-zine (on-line magazine) with the people in your class. http://www.crimsonzine.com/.

5 Now choose the topic that your presentation is going to be about. Type the topic in a search box, and search through the websites to find 3 sites that have information about your topic. Then print them out. You will have to give copies to your teacher.

6 The English Language Unit may also publish an e-zine (an online magazine) showing work done by 162 students. If you want to be involved in this, please sign up with your class teacher. Http://www.crimsonzine.com.

6 -  Paraphrasing

1 Go to http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ssw/write/handouts.paraphrasing.html and read the information on the screen.

2 For more information, go to http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/research.

3 Go to http://www.ccc.commnet.edu/grammar/parallelism.htm, and you will find some information about parallelism (paraphrasing).

4 You can download any page from the Internet, and then paraphrase it. Give a copy of the page and the paraphrased paragraph to your teacher for correction.

7A -  Mini Presentation and Summary - UFOs

1 Today you will conduct online research into the topic ‘UFOs’. Make notes with the information you find online, and then write a short summary giving the important information. Remember to use paraphrasing in your summary. If we have time, you can present your information to the rest of the class on Saturday.

2 The information may also be presented in the form of an outline:

Title: UFOs

I    definition

II   aim (to enlighten reader)

III  results (what you discovered)

IV  conclusion

V  bibliography written in correct form

3  Summaries

1 Go to http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/resarch/r_quotprsum.html and read the information on the screen.

2 You will find more information in http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ssw/write/handouts/summary.html.

7B -  Mini Presentation and Summary - UFOs

1 Type UFOs in a search box.

2 Check out the information in 3 websites.

3 Then make notes so that you can tell the rest of the class about what you found. You do not have to write an outline, but you should be able to present your information in a short presentation, and then answer questions about your findings.

4 You will find great information in: http://groups.msn.com/UFOParanormalStudies/worldufoday.msnw. You can read about UFOs, join a chat group, and watch video clips using this site. You can even send an email to Koffi Annan here, if you click on worldwidecontactpetition.msnw.

5 Another great site is: http://www.worldwidetopsites.com/sites/closeencounters.html.

6 Do you know any movies or songs about UFOs? What are their names?

7 Can you answer these questions?

What happened at Rosewell?

What are alien abductions?

Do you think there really are UFOs? Why or why not?

8 -  Essay Writing

1 Go to http://www2.actden.com/writ_den/tips/essay/index.htm. You will find easy explanations about writing different kinds of essays (definition, classification, description, comparison, sequence, choice, explanations and evaluation). Choose the type that you are going to use for your essay.

2 If you go to http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ssw/write/handouts/critthk.html, you will find points to consider when you are writing.

3 If you go to http://www.columbia.edu/cu/ssw/write/handouts/research.html, you will find steps for writing research papers.

4 Go to http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/research/index.html and you will find information about researching and listing sources.

5 Go to http://www.eslnetworld.com/intro.htm for very useful information about writing research essays.

6 Now you have to choose a topic and find 3 sources for information about it. You can find ones on the Internet, but you must also go to the library and find relevant pages in an encyclopedia, journal, or textbook. Go to http://owl.english.purdue.edu/internet/resources/fieldsnz.html to find links for a variety of topics. You will also find lists of links arranged in subject order in http://kuc02.kuniv.edu.kw/~dotmack/. Click on links.

7 You can also send your work to your blogspot in http://blogger.com or http://edublogs.org.

Webquests for Business Administration Students

Published by Dot MacKenzie under Business, Webquests

1  Introduction:

Webquests are a great way to learn about a new subject.  The ones listed here use fairly easy English, and are linked to the topics you study in your business classes.  Follow the instructions on the screen, and complete the tasks asked for in each webquest.  These are a small selection from some of the ones available.  If you need to find information about another topic that is not mentioned, type your topic in a search box, e.g. insurance webquest or business webquest,  and see what you can find.
