Phrasal Verbs

One of the problems that students face when studying English is learning the meanings of phrasal verbs.  You will find useful lists in these websites:

Academic Vocabulary Lists

1 Introduction

There are many Internet sites that deal with academic word lists. These contain information about some of the most common words used in academic and general English.

2 General List

The general service list contains some of the most used words in English. You can print out the list if you click on http://jbauman.com/gsl.html. This list is for general English and includes words that you know already.

3 Vocabulary Exercises

If you want exercises that help you learn these words, some can be found in

http://www.uefap.com/vocab/vocfram.htm and http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/%7Ealzsh3/acvocab/exercises.htm.

4 Searching for Academic Word Lists

If you need any more, type ‘academic word list’ in a search box, and see what you can find.

5 Ogden’s Basic English Word List - Alphabetic 850.

Ogden’s list contains 850 of the most common English words. Try to learn them.

http://ogden.basic-english.org/wordalph.html

6 Lextutor List

Another useful list can be found in http://www.lextutor.ca/lists_download/1000_families.txt.

7 Massey University List with Headwords

The Massey University list can be found on http://language.massey.ac.nz/staff/awl/headwords.shtml.

8 Selecting Vocabulary: Academic Word List

Academic Word List Coxhead (2000). The most frequent word in each family is in italics. There are 570 headwords and about 3000 words altogether. For more information see The Academic Word List. http://language.massey.ac.nz/staff/awl/. For more practice see the Compleat Lexical Tutor. http://www.lextutor.ca/lists_learn/

9 Specific Vocabulary

As well as knowing the frequent general words and the general academic words, there are two other types of words you need to know. You also need to know some of the less frequent words used in English and it is also necessary to know the specific words for your subject.

There is a list of words used in criminal law in http://www.uefap.com/vocab/select/sp_law.htm.

A Glossary for Science by Dot MacKenzie

Introduction:

Please fill in the tables as you come across the words in class. Learn the words as you meet them each day, and review them at the end of each week. One strategy is to take a piece of paper, write the English words on the left, and then write the Arabic on the right. Then cover the English words and write the English on the right, beside the Arabic. Keep doing this until you can remember all the words. If you cannot remember some of them, go back to them the next day, and repeat the procedure. It is also a good idea to write down and learn new words every day. You can add other words that you do not know to the lists.
